The next 8 weeks (July to September), will see European freight delays effecting manufacturers, freight forwarders and and direct shippers, importing and exporting goods across European countries.
Does your business use a Freight Forwarder or Couriers to transport goods to Europe?
If so, has your business planned for the disruption to UK imports from Europe and exporting to European destinations?
Why will there be freight delays?
Both driving bans and manufacturing closures are the primary cause of trailer shortages this summer across Europe.
This is an annual problem and at 1st European we warn our customers as soon as possible, so that you can plan ahead to avoid increase prices and delays.
Across European roads, local governments impose driving bans on vehicles over 7.5 tonnes. While these are most common in France, Spain and Italy, many European companies have adopted similar policies, such as Sunday and public holiday trailer restrictions.
Combine travel restriction across Europe and manufacturing summer closures, there becomes a lack of goods to transport.
When a haulier completes a delivery, they are naturally looking to receive a return load locally. This makes the return journey to their original country most cost effective. This is an efficient way of managing fleets and reduces the cost for all parties. The less opportunity there is to transport goods, the more the price will fluctuate.
With less demand, many hauliers use this quiet time to take their own summer breaks, meaning a knock on effect with trailer shortages, driving prices up.
UK exporters and importers have additional difficulties. Even if your goods are not delivering to France as a final destination, this is the most popular route for goods imported and exported to and from the UK. Along with manufacturing closures and road restrictions, France also imposes a strict weekend break restriction for hauliers that do not have a French base.
